America's Game

I am not really a lawyer so I don't know too much about the first amendment but I do know that freedom of speech is involved. This means that a person, no matter who it is, has the right to say what he or she wants about a given topic. In the twenty-first century, freedom of speech is also voicing your opinions over social media including Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram.

With all of the recent events in Charlotte, North Carolina, it is not surprising that people of ALL races are getting frustrated with the Black Lives Movement. African Americans and other minorities want there to be progressive change. White people also want there to be positive change for everyone. All the violence and protests are making everyone upset.

Twitter is a social media websites where people can voice their own opinions. Some people talk about a recent breakup, others talk about famous people, and some voice about politics and recent events. With everything that has come up, it's not a surprise that Charlotte is one of those events.

A catcher for the Seattle Mariners has been suspend for the rest of the reason without pay due to his tweets in regard to the recent police shootings and the Black Lives Matter movement. After learning of his suspension, he quickly changed his account to private, where only followers could see it. His tweet was along the lines of "everyone involved should be locked behind bars like animals!". He released a statement to Fox Sports apologizing for the tweet even saying that he is not a racist.

Although this statement on Twitter can be seen as offensive, an employee at Walmart would not be suspended without paid leave for saying this. Shouldn't it be protected by the first amendment to say what you believe in, whether or not it is a famous person or whether or not it is online? I am no expert, but I am pretty sure the freedom of speech is a protected right.
